Root Canal Therapy Q & A

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy is a highly effective treatment that removes infectious materials from your root canals — the tiny tubes that extend from the base of your tooth and down into the jaw. The root canals are filled with nerves, which is why infected root canals are painful.

By removing the infection from your root canals, your dentist preserves the healthy portion of your tooth. This also prevents the infection in your root canals from spreading to other teeth, your gums, bones, or throughout your body.

Why do I need root canal therapy?

When your root canals are infected, your entire tooth is in danger. The roots hold your teeth in place in your jawbone. If the infection continues untreated, you can develop small pockets of pus that can cause an abscess on your gums.

Before root canal therapy, the treatment for an infected tooth was extraction. Root canal therapy, in contrast, preserves the tooth.

Root canal therapy also preserves your oral health and overall health. Infections from your tooth can spread to your gums, bones, and other teeth, putting them all at risk. The infection can even circulate through your blood, causing a life-threatening condition called septic shock.

What happens when I get root canal therapy?

Your dentist performs root canal therapy in the comfort of the Allright Dental office. The team numbs your tooth and administers a local anesthetic so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during your procedure.

First, your dentist uses special tools to enter the tooth and extracts all of the infected material from the inner tooth and root canals. Then they clean and disinfect the tooth and root canals. Next, they reshape and smooth the root canals.

After the root canals and inner tooth are completely clean, your Allright Dental dentist fills them with a rubbery substance called gutta-percha. The gutta-percha protects your tooth from further infection and also stabilizes it, making it stronger.  They may create a filling to protect the tooth until your permanent custom-designed crown is ready or fit you with a temporary crown.

Is root canal therapy painful?

Root canal therapy has an undeserved reputation for being a painful treatment. Today’s sedation dentistry makes root canal therapy not only essential but comfortable. The only pain you’ll feel is by not treating your tooth in time.
